Elevator Hoist: Specifying The Whole Shaft System
Buying an elevator hoist as a standalone item is how projects end up with a good machine in a bad system. The hoist is the visible part, but it only works because a suspension point above it, a rope through it, a power supply beside it and an arrest device below it are all rated for the same load.

This article treats the hoist as one component in a shaft installation system and works through each link. The reference equipment comes from RIGID CO., LTD. (Wuxi Rigid Machinery) in Wuxi, Jiangsu, China, which supplies elevator installation hoists, false car platforms and safety locks as a matched set.

What the Hoist Has to Do

Material Handling Hoists and Winches

An elevator installation hoist lifts two very different things on the same rope: a work platform carrying fitters and tools, and individual guide rails or rail sets weighing up to several hundred kilograms.

Two Duties, One Rope

Those two duties pull the specification in opposite directions. Personnel work wants slow, controlled, arrest-protected movement. Material work wants speed, because a rail lift repeated forty times up a shaft is where the labour hours go.

A single-speed unit forces a compromise. A two-speed unit — 5/9, 9/18 or 6/12 m/min — resolves it: fast on the empty return, slow and controlled when loaded.

Link One: The Suspension Point

Everything hangs from the shaft head. Before the hoist is selected, the suspension beam, the rope anchor and the diverter pulley arrangement have to be confirmed as rated for the working load plus the rope's own weight.

On a 2:1 arrangement the load at the suspension point is higher than the platform load, and the diverter pulley becomes a loaded component rather than a guide. RIGID supplies diverter pulleys as accessories precisely because they are part of the load path, not an afterthought.

Where the shaft head cannot take a suspension beam, the arrangement changes to a car-top adapter. RIGID makes an adapter for car top mounting, which moves the reaction into the car frame rather than the shaft structure.

Link Two: The Rope

The rope is the only element between the machine and the anchor, and it is the element most often ignored until inspection day.

RIGID supplies steel wire rope from 6.5mm to 14.0mm, spooled by a meter-guide sheave machine so lengths are accurate. Breaking forces run from 28.4kN at 6.5mm to 157kN at 14.0mm.

Rope diameter Construction Minimum breaking force
6.5mm 5×K19S-SFC 28.4kN
8.3mm 5×K19S-SFC 49.4kN
9.1mm 5×K19S-SFC 71kN
10.2mm 5×K26WS-SFC 86.5kN
14.0mm 5×K26WS-SFC 157kN

Why Diameter Is Not a Free Choice

Rope diameter is not a free choice: the climber sheave groove, the safety lock jaw and the pressure rollers are all sized for a specific diameter. Changing rope means changing the lock.

Link Three: Power and Control

Shaft power is temporary, and it varies by site. RIGID builds hoists for 400V three-phase as standard, with 230V single-phase variants where only a domestic supply exists — a common situation on refurbishment work where the permanent distribution is not yet energised.

Control voltage is 24V on mobile units and 42V on stationary installations, which keeps the operator handle at a safe potential. Motor protection is IP55, and the hoist motor carries thermal overload protection as standard.

Two control details matter on real sites. Phase sequence protection stops a reversed supply from running the motor the wrong way, which otherwise presents as a load that will not lift. And an anti-derailment switch interface lets the platform cut the hoist if it lifts off the guide rail.

Link Four: Fall Protection

A hoist that lifts people needs an overspeed safety lock in the load path, matched to the rope diameter and rated for at least the platform load.

Hoist family Capacity Typical lock Lock rated load
LTD50 / LTD63 500 / 630kg OSL308 or OSL308A 630kg on 8.3mm rope
LTD80 800kg OSL309 or OSL309A 800kg on 9.1mm rope
LTD100 1000kg OSL510 1000kg on 10.2mm rope
LTD200 2000kg OSL714 2000kg on 14.0mm rope

The lock is a separate purchase on material-only configurations and part of the scope of supply on man-riding winches. Either way, it is not optional if a person stands on the platform.

Link Five: The Platform or Carrier

The hoist has to attach to something. On a false car, that is a bidirectional adjustable platform whose gauge range covers the shaft's rail spacing. On rail lifting work, it is a suspension arrangement with a rail clamp or hook.

RIGID builds both: FC400 aluminium platforms for 1:1 builds, FC1000 steel platforms for 2:1 builds up to 1000kg, and rail lifting hoists for guide rail work in machine-room and machine-room-less shafts.

Commissioning a Shaft System

The Setup Sequence

A short sequence avoids most first-week problems:

1. Confirm the suspension point rating against the platform load plus rope weight
2. Check the rope diameter matches the sheave, rollers and lock
3. Prove the lock by lifting and releasing before anyone stands on the platform
4. Test the emergency stop and the anti-derailment switch
5. Record rope length, lock serial number and test date in the shaft log

Why Buy the System From One Supplier

When the hoist, the platform, the lock and the rope come from different suppliers, responsibility for the interfaces is nobody's. A load pin that fits but is not rated, a rope that runs but is the wrong diameter for the jaw, an adapter that bolts on but changes the load path — these are interface failures, and they are the ones that get through inspection because each individual part looks correct.

RIGID manufactures the hoist, the false car, the safety lock and the rope as a matched range, holds TUV and SGS CE certification across the range, and has led and participated in drafting GB 40160-2021 and GB 19155-2017. Equipment is exported to nearly 70 countries with agencies and service centres in the major markets.
